Two decades later, Heathers is so on the money, with its vague but unmistakable parallels to several school shootings, that it could never be made today. Iconic lines from the film are given their appropriate due for those in the audience ready for them, and there’s a knowingness to this production, enhanced by Cameron Mitchell’s witty choreography, that brings the show up from “lazy nostalgia production” to “daring dark comedy”. Good musicals may not be getting any smarter but bad ones certainly are. Veronica (Hilary Cole), a wry and witty outcast whose best friend Martha (Lauren McKenna) is the butt of most teenage bullying, falls in with the popular girls: queen bee Heather Chandler (Lucy Maunder), and Heather McNamara (Rebecca Hetherington) and Heather Duke (Hannah Fredericksen), who truckle to Chandler’s every demand. Dark, cynical, and subversive, Heathers gently applies a chainsaw to the conventions of the high school movie -- changing the game for teen comedies to follow. I was entertained and laughing through the movie, but outside of a great cast (Veronique is a babe) there's not many cinematic elements that stand out. A super-smart black comedy about high school politics and teenage suicide that showcases a host of promising young talents.

Turning the movie into a musical, however smartly on the authors’ parts, could never have made Heathers anything better than it was. But the subversive plot machinations retain enough juice to override the weaknesses of any particular performance or of the stop-start storytelling. It's become a classic of the teenage macabre genre, and with good reason. Actors stand in awkward bunches until the lights snap off, then trudge offstage until another group trudges on. A cynical and intelligent satire that deserves credit for its deliciously witty dialogue, great performances and a clever game of colors that contrasts blue and red, even if the film is a bit tonally dissonant when it becomes too serious and dark in its third act.
