I understood the analogy being attempted, but I couldn't quite buy into it because I couldn't understand how a boy would become so overly attached to a balloon, so that's where my struggle came in. I found that part so touching I got a little teary eyed. Even if students are not experiencing grief at the time of the story, it will help them cope with, unfortunately, the inevitability of this topic.

This was a beautiful children's book with gorgeous pictures that deals with loss and grief. The striking illustrations clearly set it in the past, and it deals with universal themes of loss and grief, but I didn't totally connect with it. This is one I would use with students to discuss these difficult topics. Then one day, the balloon slips away into the sky. However by getting that confession out of the way I hope that anyone reading this review understands that I would not give it 5 stars unless it was one of our top selling books.

As it slips into the sky and he goes on without it, the color washes away from his world. The text features of this book are remarkable. The balloon floats up to the sky and is gone forever.

I began by reading this book with my little three-year-old friend; he was excited when he saw the bright big yellow balloon on the front cover. An affecting story about grief and loss but the illustrations look too much like stills from an animated film. At that instant Joey realizes that he has found his favorite toy. Refresh and try again. The concept is a hard one to cover with children, especially little ones so this is one of those good introductory books to start off with although I noticed the feeling of guilt wasn't covered within the book like I think it should be. What a darling book!

The illustrations where very beautiful and my 6 year old daughter enjoyed it. Set in the 1930s with the most beautiful illustrations by Erwin Madrid to accompany, MY YELLOW BALLOON is a children's book destined to become a classic to help children deal with and process grief. As a friend of the author it is hard for me to put into words the beauty of this book without feeling that I might be a wee bit bias.
