Ray has found a man named Clay Beckwith (Cole), who he believes is Marzin living under an alias. It’s a very deftly and subtly played character point. In its opening weekend, it was projected to gross $7–9 million from 2,392 theaters. There was no terrorist attack on Los Angeles. (This should have raised the first alarm bell.). In 2002, shortly after 9/11, Ray Kasten (Ejiofor), a counterterrorism agent for the FBI, and his friend Jessica "Jess" Cobb (Roberts), an investigator for the Los Angeles district attorney's office, meet new ADA Claire Sloan (Kidman). Ugh I was looking for the answer of what he said also… couldn’t understand anything he said in this movie, I read this entire article just to hear what he said in the cage and still I don’t have an answer. The first movie I thought about when I got out of Secret in Their Eyes was Prisoners, interestingly enough. Jess’s daughter is found, raped and murdered, and Ray tries to find the killer, Marzin (Joe Cole), who turns out to be the snitch that another agent in the task force is using to track alleged terrorists in a nearby mosque. [6], STX had initially scheduled the film for release on October 23, 2015,[7] but in July 2015, the film was moved back to its eventual November 20, 2015 release date. [4], Principal photography began on January 26, 2015, in Los Angeles. All of the justification for turning a blind eye to his rape and murder of Caroline turned out to be worthless. I also appreciated, by the way, what a solid friendship was depicted between Jess and Ray, with all the sexual tension saved for Ray and Claire. After his release, the police find Marzin's van, but Siefert burns it to destroy the evidence against Marzin. The other theme of this film is the idea of passion being the thing that sustains a person, and that their passion will always win out. A sexist would have called me something else.”. I’m so glad you liked it. It’s disquieting, if not in quite as vile a way as, say, Nightcrawler. I think because Secret in Their Eyes is the movie Prisoners kind of wanted to be–a story about the destructive power of revenge without getting sidetracked by an unnecessarily convoluted mystery investigation. Jess and Ray receive a call about an unknown female body found in a dumpster near a local mosque, which Ray has been investigating for possible terrorist links. Secret in Their Eyes is a 2015 American thriller film written and directed by Billy Ray and a remake of the 2009 Argentine film of the same name, both based on the novel La pregunta de sus ojos by author Eduardo Sacheri. He’s saved by the police coming in, but one of the officers is killed in the process, and Jess, who is along for it, is furious. Claire taunts Marzin, provoking him to expose himself and punch her, saying he's going to give Claire what Carolyn got. Ray has his guilt because he was supposed to meet Caroline at the bakery she was abducted from, to help pick up a birthday cake for Jess, and he’d begged off at the last minute because he had work to do. Ray’s need for revenge and closure keeps him motivated for 13 years, during which he spends every night combing through convict photos in the hope of spotting Marzin again, because the man disappeared off the face of the planet after he was initially brought in and then released. There’s no good answer as to if this is justice, or if this will give Jess any kind of peace. Later, Ray follows Jess into her barn and discovers that Marzin is actually alive, having been imprisoned in a cage for over a decade. Ray hears Jess shooting Marzin. Marzin is supposedly a snitch who has infiltrated the mosque that the counter terrorism force is watching. The real horrifying reveal of the film is that Marzin isn’t dead, but rather has been imprisoned in a cage in one of Jess’s out buildings, where he’s had no contact with other people and appears elderly before his time, physically broken by being confined to a small space. It’s an excellent film with excellent acting in it, but definitely not a happy film that’s going to leave you feeling good. Would Jess have found more peace if Marzin had been put through the criminal justice system? There’s no clear answer to this, but the reason it never happened was…. Beckwith and his men are arrested, but Jess insists that Beckwith is not Marzin. While helping Jess pack, Ray notices pictures from a picnic thrown for law enforcement in which a young man is seen staring at Carolyn. Claire argues with Ray over his methods while seemingly defending Marzin, saying he wasn't capable of the crime. The movie jumps between 2002 and 2015. It’s an exploration of the reality of thwarted passion and thwarted justice, and what it does to people who live with it. [13] On CinemaScore, audiences gave the film an average grade of "B–" on an A+ to F scale. Martin Morales (Molina) is reluctant to go after Marzin, fearing it would compromise the terrorism investigation. The two meet each other with a sense of relief while Claire officially closes Carolyn's case. “Thanks for not being sexist. But Claire’s engaged to a hedge fund manager, and Ray’s too good of a guy to try to get between them. [3], In North America, the film opened alongside The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 and The Night Before on November 20, 2015. But as Ray points out, she’s given herself a life sentence as well. Something to the effect of “can you tell her to talk to me,” I believe. Gross. They obviously have a real thing for each other, starting in 2002. [8], The film's first trailer was released on June 30, 2015. He’s already been here for 12 years.” Whereas Claire asks Ray why he didn’t ask her to come with him, and Ray says because that way he can believe she might have. Amazing. Ray beats Marzin, which leads to Morales ordering Marzin released. (Who thankfully does not buy it for a single second.) Sorry, your blog cannot share posts by email. It’s likely not. It received mixed reception from critics, who praised its performances but compared it unfavorably to the original. The end of the film is Ray going outside to dig a grave for Marzin, after leaving his loaded gun on the counter for Jess to use on the prisoner. For a moment, Secret in Their Eyes leans toward revelation, in a following scene where Claire, Ray, and Marzin appear in an elevator with mirrored walls. Please enable cookies on your web browser in order to continue. There’s a moment early on, when Ray tells Jess, “You’re being a dick.” And she returns. Kidman and Ejiofor are both absolutely excellent, which shouldn’t really be a surprise to anyone’s who’s seen either of them in a movie. When Ray and Claire pay a visit to Jess's isolated farmhouse, she confesses that she found and killed Marzin thirteen years previously, shortly after Ray left Los Angeles.
