This is the old park film that used to play in the park visitor center. On November 13, 1886 the Coronado Beach Co. held an auction for the sale of lots ranging in price from $500.00 to $1600.00. The Hotel del Coronado, completed in early 1888, officially opened its doors to the public on February 19th.

Babcock and Story leaked news of a proposed hotel on Coronado to the local newspapers, which caused a great deal of excitement in the community of San Diego and beyond. The name “Coronado Stone Products” began as a suggestion from a dealer who wanted a brand name to promote Mel’s new stone products at a home show in San Diego, CA. Coronado sold! We also operate distribution facilities in Maryland and Western Canada. Coronado and the Hotel del Coronado would grow together, side by side, for decades — each equally benefiting the other. All sizes listed on the web site are nominal. The official map of Coronado is recorded in San Diego and the first lot sale on November 13 attracts 6,000 prospective buyers. Many of Coronado’s treasured traditions began in the first quarter of the twentieth century. The land was purchased by Elisha Spurr Babcock, along with Hampton L. Story, and Jacob Gruendike. In 1963, he found the mold material necessary to guarantee a high-quality finished product. In the mid 1960’s, Coronado began to license the use of molds and production technology to various start-up companies throughout the United States. Mel’s many years of experience as a mason helped during the creation of a panelized stone veneer profile that would save time and money during the installation process. The peninsula changed hands several times over the next 39 years until it was purchased by Elisha S. Babcock, Jr., Hampton L. Story, and Jacob Gruendike, for $110,000.00 on November 19, 1885.
